Jim Cooper Award
Jim Cooper was a marshal at Red Wing Golf Course for many years before he decided to take up golf and joined the Red Wing Senior Golf Association in 1990. He immediately jumped in and became involved by volunteering as secretary and then treasurer. Jim continued his involvement for many years and was a true golfing gentleman. Jim always was the first to shake your hand and say “nice game, it's been fun playing golf with you”. Jim Cooper died much too soon from diabetes and many members attended his funeral. In 2009, the Red Wing Senior Golf Association created and first awarded the Jim Cooper Sportsman Award to honor him by recognizing a member who has gone above and beyond in supporting the association and displays both respect for the game of golf and his fellow golfers.
Previous Winners
Legacy Award
This is a new award started in 2025 that recognizes member(s) for sustained support of the association over many years. Although this is not an annual type award, the first two winners of this award are Harry Watson and Doug Miller
Harry Watson
He was President in 2015 and up until 2024, set up the annual schedule for club play. When Christmas Parties were held at Atlantic Ave location, he took charge to see the venue was set up properly, obtained decorations for the venue and solicited door prizes from other courses and vendors. For many years he took care of ordering the Award Trophies and Plaques. In addition, he maintained and updated the RWSGA boards which hang on the walls inside the Red Wing Golf Course Club House.
Doug Miller
Our second recipient has also served the association for many years. He has served as President multiple times...four to be exact (2010, 2013, 2017 and 2024). In fact, he has served so many times that on one occasion, he was on a cruise when he found out he had been nominated and elected!! In the Fall of 2011, he took over arranging and setting up the Bi-Annual OBX outings and with the arrival of Covid he adapted to using local courses. For many years has volunteered to provide a Pink Thursday every month where anyone wearing pink receives a free drink at no cost to the Association (though he will not let me promote them). Rumors even have it that pink underwear count but not sure how he validates those. Three times, he has donated a timeshare in Williamsburg to be raffled to the membership with all proceeds going to our treasury. For more years than most can remember, he has set-up and coordinated the winter golf along with the additional days of golf during the regular season. While we all love to give him grief and a hard time, he accepts it with a smile, some laughter.
